Lately, my paintings have been complemented by photographs and objects.
The photographic series “Towers” is a tribute to the concept artist Felix Gonzales Torres. At an exhibition in the “Fondation Beyeler” in Basel, Switzerland (2010), I removed two pieces of paper from a pile that could be taken away by visitors.
I loved his idea of sharing this artwork with the world in a very concrete way, a never-ending pile of printed paper, always restocked. I forgot the name of the installation, but for me this exhibition was very poetic and one of my biggest art experiences in the last decade.
Back home, I didn’t want to pin the two pieces of paper on the wall as a “trophy”. Instead I wanted to put them in a new context. So I came up with the idea of leaving the papers as a role and placing/dislocating them in different new settings. The form of the rolled paper reminded me of a “tower” which is, of course, also part of the artist’s name.
